Destiny 2 players were greeted to a new cutscene after the February 18 Weekly Reset, and it offered Guardians a glimpse at what to expect from Season 10 of Bungie's online shooter. Osiris and Rasputin appear to be gearing up for an alliance or confrontation, but what does that mean for the rest of the game's lore? That's what we're here to explain.

The clip opens on Mars, as Osiris approaches the Warmind AI known as Rasputin. He essentially insults him a few times by calling him a "thug, murderer [and] betrayer" based on what he's witnessed in time travel through the Infinite Forest. Osiris further describes Destiny 2's ongoing feud between darkness and light and asks Rasputin which side of the war he's truly on. While the dialogue itself sounds like fighting words, there's a sense Osiris might be willing to make an unlikely partnership or double down against a strong adversary.

In order to truly understand the relationship between these two characters, one must recall some of the oldest lore in the Destiny universe. As players will likely know, the Traveler is described as a kind God who once wished to endow humanity and the Fallen with great wealth and prosperity. The Traveler's plans changed, however, when Darkness enveloped Fallen lands. As a result, the benevolent force basically ditched the Fallen to focus on humanity. That was true until the Collapse, when Darkness attacked humans and its former homeworld on Earth. The legend goes that the Traveler tried to intervene in the fight but was injured in the process, forced to hover around Earth for centuries.

When it comes to Season 10, the implication being made by Osiris is that Rasputin, who lives right next door on Mars, may have had something to do with the injury to the Traveler. Did the AI try to stop the Traveler to assert its own power, or was the Warmind aware of nefarious plans humanity does not yet know? It would appear the next part of Destiny 2's Annual Pass seeks to answer those fundamental questions. The true nature of Rasputin has been a subject of debate since the Warmind DLC arrived in 2018, and it seems that narrative fire will be reignited in the coming weeks.

The new cutscene may be short, but the 60-second clip also offers some large hints about what players can expect to experience once Season 10 begins. If the plot is indeed focused on Rasputin, it's safe to assume Mars will play a critical role in the upcoming plot. Could we soon be getting a remixed version of Escalation Protocol as a new PvE activity in tandem with the return of Trials of Osiris after meeting the goals of the Empyrean Foundation? Since these two events are linked to the featured characters in question, the pairing would make a lot of sense. It'll likely be quiet in Destiny 2 for a couple weeks as Bungie puts the finishing touches on the new content, but this short clip is a nice preview of what's to come.

Destiny 2 is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC. An exact start date for Season 10 has not been confirmed, but it's expected to begin around March 10.
